From China to Appalachia Sunday September 21, 2025 – 2:00pm GRAMMY Award winning American Roots artists Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer join with Chinese classical hammered dulcimer player Chao Tian in this folk infused world music exploration. Chinese and American songs are accompanied on yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer), gourd banjo, five-string banjo, ukulele, guitars, dumbek, cello-banjo and mandolin. The group’s repertoire includes traditional Chinese and Appalachian music as well as contemporary and traditional music from around the world. Unusual combinations explore new arrangements to old music, such as “Dark Eyes.” Ukulele, yangqin and guitar create a new pallet for this Russian folk song turned jazz manouche tune. Cathy and Marcy join Chao in singing a Chinese lullaby, “Nani Wan” and Chao easily adds her love of American Old-Time music to fiddle tunes and songs. Friendship Festival - A 50-year Celebration of the Torrance Sister City Association Saturday February 18, 2023 – 7:00 pm Celebrating 50 years of friendship with Torrance's sister city, Kashiwa Japan, this evening will highlight some of the talented past delegates who have gone on to professional careers in the performing arts. You will be treated to the likes of master storyteller Shinoharu (Ittetsu Kojima) from Japan, MacIntyre Family Singers featuring Carol William (South High School alumni) Scott (finalist of American Idol), Todd (Mama Mia) Katelyn. Taiko drummer Alex Ito, will perform techno interpretations of traditional taiko pieces. The Torrance Civic Chorale who performed in Kashiwa in 1987 and greeted the Kashiwa delegates at Torrance City Hall in 2018 for the 45th anniversary will be performing selected pieces for the occasion, plus other surprise guest performers.
